Privacy

The Privacy Foundation, the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse and the Electronic Privacy Information Center provide news of events affecting all forms of privacy and discussion of privacy issues.

Junkbusters.com : defensive and legal information on all forms of junk communications including spam, cookies, and online ads, as well as junk snail mail and telemarketing calls; it also lists hundreds of links to books, online sites, and articles on privacy issues plus links to and descriptions of protective software (some free). Comprehensive resource.

Anonymizer provides free anonymous surfing but is ad-supported and slow. The Cloak is a new anonymous surfing service.

Privoxy, Proxomitron, and Guidescope are all free and block ads, cookies, webbugs, and referrals. The Opera browser stops popups dead, or accepts them, your choice. NetWorker is a front end for IE which also can block popups, and Mozilla has several browsers with good pop-ups/ads control. ZoneAlarm (see below) stops hidden programs (spy or trojanware) from sending out information on your activities without authorization. CEXX provides information on spies and trojans, and neutralizing software. Here is a list of websites offering spyware detection for use *before* downloading new software :).

Protection

Zonealarm, free, provides an anti-hacker firewall protecting against unauthorized intrusions from outside and also against internal spy or trojanware.

Shields Up shows whether your computer is visible and vulnerable to the rest of the world over the internet, and this on ePinion discusses security for always-on connections such as DSL, ISDN, and cable. There are free Online Security checks available so you don't have to pay for McAfee or whatever. Routers with mechanical firewalls help, for example the SMC router.
