Letter From the EditorWelcome back for another year of the BARTEE NEWS. It looks like we will have a very informative year! This issue will include a portion of the National Archive files LaVerle STEVENS has shared with us. I spent a great deal of time trying to decide how to put these in the newsletter. There just seemed to be too much for one issue. I finally decided that spreading it out over several issues would work the best. Of course, if one of these is your ancestor and youre anxious to see the file, I dont want to keep you waiting too long. Drop me a note and Ill get a copy to you. The following is the current publication schedule for these records: 1) Oct 92 - John BARTEE, South Carolina, War of 1812 Note: Not included is the file for Jesse BARTEE, SC, War of 1812. His combined pension and bounty land file was covered in Vol. 2, No. 3, pg. 38. I would like to make the July 93 issue a special Independence Day issue since it will contain these Revolutionary War files. Wanda BEEMAN has sent in a DAR membership application citing William BARTEE as the Revolutionary ancestor which will be a perfect addition to this issue. I would like to ask all of you to keep this special issue in mind as you search for information or if you plan on ordering some BARTEE info for the newsletter. One other note concerning these files: the National Archives normally sends only portions of large files unless you request a quote for copying the entire file and then send in that dollar amount. So, it is possible that there is still more paperwork in the files of some of these individuals. I do know that what the National Archives sent LaVerle on Jesse BARTEE was only a portion as I have a copy of the entire file. One of our newest members, Robert BARTEE, made a trip through Texas this summer and turned up lots of new info on his family. Among his finds were several death certificates and the location of his great grandmothers grave. I am always excited at any new BARTEE info, but since Robert and I share great great grandparents I was doubly excited by what he sent in - especially since it has been a long, long time since anything new turned up on this branch of the BARTEE family tree. Id also like to send all of our best wishes to Judy BARTEE along with the hope that she is having a speedy recovery. I was quite surprised last month to learn that Judy had been ill for the past few years and had received a kidney transplant in July. It made me realize that we know more about each others ancestors than we do about each other. I hope we can change that in the future. Dont forget about the BARTEE reunion on October 24. Hope to see you there! ------- Until next time, Happy Ancestor Hunting!
QueriesWanda BEEMAN is interested in tracing the family of Melenah, wife of Jesse BARTEE, Jr. (see FGR in Vol. I, No. 2). Does anyone know Melenahs maiden name? Can you help Wanda get started? Any details, proof, suggestions or hunches concerning Melenahs ancestry would be greatly appreciated. v v v May BARTEE COUCH asks if anyone knows who the parents of John S. and Ann BARTEE were? Where and when did they die? Where are they buried? Any other information on this family will be appreciated. See this issue pg. 85 for 1860 census data on John S. and Ann. v v v Please send query responses to THE BARTEE NEWS c/o Linda MEARSE. A copy will be retained for the newsletter and your response will be forwarded immediately to the individual who placed the query.
