Bartee Family Reunion Planned

A BARTEE reunion will be held near Bastrop, Texas on October 24, 1992. Many descendants of John Overton BARTEE and Elizabeth MURRAH BARTEE are expected to attend. Descendants of John Overton’s siblings who can be located will also be invited.

Anyone with a BARTEE connection will be most welcome and can help us turn this from a family reunion into a clan gathering. If you would like to have your name added to the mailing list for this reunion please contact: Linda MEARSE, 2841 Paso Del Robles, San Marcos, Tx 78666.

Letter From the Editor

Hope you are having a nice summer. Ours has been very busy so far and there is no change in sight. Max has attended two conferences in Corpus Christi in the last two months. Melanie and I were able to tag-along and so we have had a couple of mini-vacations. We saw the new Texas State Aquarium, spent a little time on the beach and ate our fill of shrimp. On our last trip we viewed the WWII aircraft carrier, the Lexington, from a distance. She will be opened as a museum and conference center sometime in August. I was really disappointed at not being able to go aboard, but I guess that will give me something to look forward to next time.

An extra special thanks goes out this issue to May BARTEE COUCH for volunteering to index volumes I and II (1990 and 1991) of the BARTEE NEWS. May, who is a professional genealogist, took two days out of her busy schedule to create these indices for us. We have all been longing for an index and I’m sure that we will find these to be a great aid. Each index should be removed from this issue and attached to the back of the volume to which it belongs. May has also volunteered to continue the project and index Vol. III. THANK YOU May for your time and support!!!

Regarding my concerns voiced in the last newsletter that the “well was running low” on new BARTEE info in my neck of the woods -- “NEVER MIND.” My concerns prompted me to write a few letters I had been putting off. I had addresses for some possible BARTEE researchers from old publications. Because most of these were over 10 years old I had no hope of actually making contact, but I really learned my lesson! Never make such an assumption - you might miss out on something really good!!!

I broke the #1 rule of genealogy correspondence (always enclose a SASE) and sent postcards rather than letters. I reasoned that if the addressee was no longer at that address, whomever received the postcard would flip it over and read it. My hope was that the postcard might still find its way to the addressee or another BARTEE researcher. Most of my postcards were returned, as expected. One was even returned because there was no longer a “mail receptacle” at that address! However, one was answered and that one made up for all the undelivered postcards that were returned.

LaVerle STEVENS very kindly answered my postcard and offered to share her research. I am very excited to report that she has copies of the Revolutionary War and War of 1812 National Archive files on all the BARTEEs who served during these conflicts. LaVerle also has some wonderful family history stories and pictures to share. This issue has a picture and a very interesting story about her great grandmother, Martha Elizabeth BARTEE HOUGH.

Thanks to LaVerle and the items the rest of you will send in during the upcoming year (and we still need pedigrees and family group sheets from some of you!!), I’m sure we will have plenty of info for our next subscription year. The following items will be included in upcoming issues: Revolutionary War and War of 1812 pension files for BARTEEs; BARTEEs listed in the Social Security Death Records (includes date of birth and death, state where SS card was issued, and state to which death benefit was mailed); and much more!

Queries

Dorothy H. PANTIER needs information on Susan BARTEE. According to the 1850 GA census, Susan was born c. 1800, GA. She married Edward SATTERWHITE on 16 Aug 1821 in Jones Co, GA. (see July ’91, pg. 60 -62 for FGR and pedigree)

Other BARTEEs in GA about this time that could be part of Susan’s family were:

Abraham M. BARTEE, born ca. 1803/4, married Eliza WRIGHT 27 Dec 1826 in Jones Co., GA

Robert BARTEE, listed on 1821 GA land lottery. Robert’s orphans were listed on the 1832 land lottery

James BARTEE, Wilkinson Co., listed on third land lottery

George W. BARTEE, listed on 1826 land lottery

Further information on Susan or any of these BARTEEs would be most appreciated.

Ms. STONE was registered as researching Lydie BARTEE, b. 1889 TN, d. 1958 TN; fth: Joe BARTEE; mth: Cora PRUITT; Sp: J. R. TAYLOR. A letter sent to Ms. STONE was returned “forwarding order expired.” If you have had any contact with Ms. STONE or know her current address, please advise.

MARTHA ELIZABETH BARTEE

Martha Elizabeth Bartee
Born 1834, Asheville, North Carolina
Daughter of John BARTEE and Susanna BOLING BARTEE

LaVerle STEVENS sent the following story about her great grandmother, Martha Elizabeth BARTEE HOUGH:

My mother told me that Martha Elizabeth (born 1834 at Asheville, NC) got into a fight with her boyfriend. She got mad and said that after that she was going to marry the first man who came along. That was when Mr. Hough, a Yankee, and not a good character, came along. She married him. Of course, the family did not like the idea of her marrying a Yankee. Also, my aunt Hazel, my mother’s twin sister, told me that Martha Elizabeth BARTEE’s sisters were supposed to have chided her and told her how awful it was going to be never to have a servant to wait on her. So, it’s obvious that some of these BARTEEs were slave owners.

Its sort of comical in a way but my mother told me that when my grandmother’s father (Mr. HOUGH, the Yankee) died, Grandma is supposed to have said, “He should have been dead a long time ago.” What an awful thing to say about a parent, but I gather from what I hear that he was not a good character in many ways, a man of English descent.

[Callie Faye MILLIKEN and I had theorized that her ancestor James William BARTEE (see Jan. ’92, pg. 9) was the son of George BARTEE (Jan. ’91, pg. 8) and that this George might have some connection to Abraham BARTEE of GA and AL. Looks like someone else thinks (or knows) so too. If anyone has any further information please let us know!]

Births

Submitted by Linda MEARSE
Source: Index to Texas Probate Birth Certificates

These indexes are located at the Texas State Library, Genealogy Room. They are carbon copies and therefore sometimes very difficult to read, particularly the numbers. If you request a copy of the certificate from the Texas Bureau of Vital Statistics and use these certificate numbers please state they were obtained from a blurred carbon copy and may not be the correct file number.

Only the last two digits are given for the year of birth, but it should be apparent which are the 1800’s and which the 1900’s as these are “probate” or “delayed” birth certificates. A birth in the 70’s or 80’s would indicate 1870 or 1880; the 20’s or 30’s would indicate 1920 or 1930.

Copies of the certificate can be obtained from the Texas Bureau of Vital Statistics, Texas Health Dept., Austin, Tx. Fees as of 9/1/91 are: birth cert. - $11; death cert. - $9; marriages - $9; and divorces - $9.

His grandparents, on the maternal side were Augusta Jerome DENTON and Synthia Evaline (SCHOOLEY) DENTON. They had a large two story frame home, located at the end of Main Street in Lindsay, and Jerome was born in front bedroom of that home.

When Jerome, called “Denton” by family members, was about 3 months old, Ruby left Andrew P. BARTEE and returned to her parents home in Lindsay. They were divorced soon after that.

Ruby later married Benjamin Camel HARMON and moved to Fort Worth, Texas, where Denton grew up. Mr. HARMON did not adopt him and he grew up with the BARTEE name. He attended schools in Fort Worth, Texas and quit school after the ninth (9th) grade and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was sent to Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonio, Texas and remained in the service for almost a year, when he was discharged for being under age. He returned to Fort Worth, Texas.

On June 26, 1926, Jerome Denton BARTEE married Hilda Ileta MUSGRAVE at ceremony in the home of Mrs. Ray (YUNA) DRAKE on 26th Street in Fort Worth, Texas. Three children were born of this union:

Evelyn Joy BARTEE b. May 26, 1927 Fort Worth, Texas - 2018 Ellis Avenue
Patsy Lavone BARTEE b. December 7, 1932 Haltom City, Texas - Rural Route
Jerome Denton BARTEE, Jr. b. May 15, 1934 Haltom City, Texas - Rural Route

“Denton” and Hilda with their children remained in the Fort Worth, Texas area until 1939. He worked for Armour Packing Company, and during the depression had a second job as nightwatchman for Mr. ADKINS, who owned grocery store in the Haltom City area.

In 1939 Denton, Hilda and their children moved to Houston, Texas and first resided at 1618 Dallas, moving from that location to 2018 Rusk. Denton worked as carpenter for some months after moving to Houston. He then held a number of jobs as cook and chef. He worked as chef at the Rice Hotel in Houston for some time, however, quit this good position due to disagreement with his boss. After this he held jobs in either the restaurant field or in construction. He was, like his father had been before him a “Jack of all trades - master of none”. He could perform almost any job, was intelligent and talented in many endeavors - but, was high tempered and would quit jobs at the drop of a hat, not thinking of his (or his family’s) future.

When World War II began, December 7, 1941, he enlisted in the National Maritime Union, and was Merchant Seaman during the war years. He rose to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. Shipping out with the Merchant Fleet, he traveled all over the world on ships that carried high test airplane gasoline, fuel and oil. He would be gone many months at a time and during 1945, when docking in Norfolk, Virginia, he met the woman that was to be his second wife.

Hilda and the three children had remained in Houston, Texas during the World War II years. Like his father, before him, Denton rarely sent money home for the support of his family. Hilda worked, as did Evelyn, the oldest daughter and were able to survive.

In April, 1945 Hilda filed for divorce. She later married Curtis E. EVERETT in Houston.

Denton then married the Marie [Marie Patricia HENSON] that he had met in Norfolk, Virginia. They lived there for about a year and then moved back to Fort Worth, Texas, where their two sons were born.

Sons born of this union were Larry Gene BARTEE and Jimmy Neal BARTEE. After this Denton and Marie moved to Houston, Texas, where a daughter was born to them and she was Donna Marie BARTEE.

Fo the last many years of his life, Denton worked for Brown & Root Construction Co. He was an excellent carpenter, able to perform almost any task asked of him. He had mellowed down during the last years and was able to keep a job with no problems, other than occasional flaring of his temper. He was 64 years old when he had to take off from his job due to heart condition.

On September 19, 1973, at Southmore Hospital in Pasadena, Texas, he had a series of severe heart attacks and passed away on that date. He had been in the hospital for five (5) days.

He is buried in marked grave at Brookside Cemetery, Houston, Texas (on I-59 at Lauder Rd.) His son, Jerome Denton BARTEE, Jr. also died of heart attack at age 42 and is buried 2 spaces over from Denton’s grave.
