Queries

James K. LIPPS of 372 Woodview Dr. Noblesville, IN 46060, would like any information on the Carter Co., TN BARTEES. His great-great grandparents, Micajah LIPPS and Lucinda BARTEE were married on 5 Sep 1831 in Carter Co., TN. According to the 1850 census her place of birth was Virginia. James believes, but would like proof, that Lucinda was the daughter of Hiram BARTEE.

William L. MING of Rt. 2, Box 95, Lorena, TX 76655, would like to find the parents of his second great Grandmother, Elizabeth BARTIE. Elizabeth BARTIE married Samuel Gregory MING on 14 Mar 1815 in Chowan Co., NC. William writes “This is the only mention I have of Elizabeth. Sometime during the next 4 years, Samuel moves to Limestone Co., AL. I have searched in that county for Elizabeth but to no avail. She just disappears.”

RESPONSE: Very seldom do we have a possible answer to a query so quickly! The above query was received the first week of October. On November 1st, a copy of Hathaway’s Vol. I was located (remember the request for this book in our last issue?). Included in Anthony BARTIE’s will (Chowan Co.) was an Elizabeth BARTIE!!! (See pg. 4 for abstract). William MING’s long sought g-g-g grandfather may have finally been found! Please keep us posted, William!

UPDATE: This was too exciting to wait for the January newsletter, so a call was made to William to relate the above info. Unfortunately, I have since heard from William that Elizabeth is referred to as an older child and already married in Anthony BARTIE’s will in 1792. Since William’s Elizabeth did not marry Samuel MING until 1815, it appears that these are two different women---and so the search continues!

KEEP THE INFORMATION COMING---IT WILL PAY OFF!!!

In Memoriam
Reverend Willie L. BARTEE
Sept. 30, 1909 - Nov. 30, 1989

You left us 2 years ago, although it seems like today. We still miss you and love you.

You were taken so suddenly with no time for goodbyes. When the burden of losing you gets the best of me, I think of all the love, happiness, and joy you brought into my life and the wonderful years we shared...
“Across the years, I have walked with you.”

Your loving wife, Shellie V. BARTEE

Abstract of Wills

BARTIE, Anthony, (Chowan), Oct. 27, 1792. Wife ------, daughters Dinah and Margaret, sons Nathaniel and Thomas, son Eli Exr. four eldest children John, Wm., Elizabeth and Mary, all my children. Test, Wm. CHARLTON, Samuel BEASLEY, Will WILKINS, Edward COFFIELD.

BARTIE, Eli, (Chowan), June 19, 1829. James BOZMAN, property to be sold for the benefit of the Parish. Test, Thomas CHARLTON.

[The above abstract for Anthony BARTIE has quite a bit more and differing information (Margaret listed as mother on one and as daughter on the other) from the one for Anthony BARTER (BARTIE) listed on page 66 of the October issue. Since I have read that there are some accuracy problems with the source used in the October issue, I would be more likely to trust the above abstract. This is an excellent example for following the genealogy rules which suggest using primary (or original) sources whenever possible and checking secondary sources (copied information) by referring back to the primary record.]

Family Profile

John R. Bartee and Descendents

Lynn Shepherd’s fourth installment continues with Ciscero C. “CEE” BARTEE, son of Thomas Andrew BARTEE. This series will continue in the next issue with Ciscero C.’s son Andrew P. BARTEE.

Ciscero C. Bartee

b. 10 Jun 1867
d. 16 Jan 1901

Ciscero C. “Cee” BARTEE was born on June 10, 1867 in Quitman, Clarke County, Mississippi to Thomas Andrew BARTEE and Mary Jane (BASS) BARTEE, two years after the Civil War had ended.

Ciscero maried Jo Ellen LAWSON (b. 3-7-1872 d. 4-4-1936), with the marriage probably having been performed in Van Alstyne, Texas (although they could have been married in Arkansas, since she was born there.

Jo Ellen LAWSON was of Swedish extraction, with her father being Fank LAWSON and her mother being Elizabeth “Betty” LAWSON>

Children born of this marriage were:

Willie Mae b. 8-25-1888 in Van Alstyen, Texas
Andrew P. (“Buddie”) b. 9-28-1891 in Van Alstyen, Texas
Oscar Alanzo (“Bean”) b. 8-11-1896 in Oklahoma
Jessie Agnes (twin) b. 12-19-1898 in Oklahoma
Allie Lee b. (twin) 12-19-1898 in Oklahoma

Ciscero C. BARTEE owned and operated a General Store and was financially well off. The family moved from Van Alstyne, Texas to Weaverton, Oklahoma and then to Madill, Oklahoma, where he resided until the time of his death. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Tyler, Oklahoma. He was also a member of Woodmen of the World.

Ciscero C. BARTEE died on January 16, 1901, due to after effects of having had Typhoid fever. He had pneumonia just prior to his death, which probably was also a contributing cause of death. He is buried, with Woodmen of the World marker in the cemetery at Oakland, Oklahoma.

After Cisceros death, his widow, Jo Ellen remarried Charley JONE and had three children of this marriage, Fay, Alec and Tinnie. She then remarried again to one George Pennington GARDNER and had another daughter, Thelma GARDNER.

Jo Ellen (LAWSON) BARTEE, JONE, GARDNER died of enlarged heart condition on April 5, 1936 and is buried at Carter, Oklahoma.

Included with this history is article, headed up Pilot Grove (Grayson County, Texas). We believe, but have yet to prove that the “Mr. BARTEE, whose name seems to have been lost --” is our Ciscero C. BARTEE. Since he had the General Store and was succesful storekeeper later in life, feel that this is our “Mr. BARTEE”, and indeed is Ciscero C. BARTEE.

Pilot Grove History

by Betty Stripling

H48

Being located in the extreme southeastern part of Grayson County, Pilot Grove was one of the first three settlements of the area, the other two being a Fort at Preston Bend, and Coffee’s Trading Post, near present day Dension [Denison]. ... The first families who came to Pilot Grove were: Garrett F. LANKFORD, Charles A. Smith and a Mr. BARTEE, whose given name seems to have been lost, although he was to be the first store keeper of Pilot Grove. He built a strong log building, attached to his house, with a puncheon floor, where he stored his farm supplies, so that he would not have to leave his farming chores so often. However, he soon found that he could make more money by driving his wagon to Jefferson, to met the River boat, and bringing supplies over-land, to sell or trade to his neighbors. He also brought mail and newspapers from the north.

[The above article on Pilot Grove is from a local county history book for Grayson County, Texas. Exact title is not known.]

The J. W. Bartee Family

[Includes photo of J. W. and Elizabeth BARTEE, but this did not xerox clear enough for inclusion here.]

James William BARTEE, born in Georgia in 1835, came to Texas as a small child, his father being the recipient of a Spanish land grant. He married Elizabeth HADDOX, daughter of William HADDOX. She was born in Tennessee in 1838.

Both families of this couple had migrated to Houston County in the wave of settlers in the 1850’s, and James and Elizabeth made their home on a farm at Pearson Chapel. Their house was located about a mile north of the school house. Her father and mother and brothers lived near.

James enlisted in the Texas Militia in 1861 in the company commanded by Captain D. A. NUNN. In 1862 he served in Co. 1, 13th Regiment, under Colonel John H. BURNETT.

Their children included Mary Caroline (b. 1860), William J. (b. 1865), Martha E. (b. 1867), Georgia (b. 1873), Florence (b. 1879), and Harley (b. 1882).

Three of the children were lifelong residents of Houston County. Mary Caroline (Callie) married George G. McCULLAR in 1882, and they made their home at Pearson Chapel until 1910 when they moved to Lovelady and built a home one mile west of town. He died in 1939, she in 1940, and they are buried in Evergreen Cemetery of Lovelady. Their children included Enoch W., George F., Jr., Elna (Mrs. Dave DAUPHIN), Minnie Ola (Mrs. T. E. MILLIKEN), Hortense (Mrs. Arthur B. MILLIKEN), and Ida Jane (Mrs. Sam P. JONES).

Martha E. (Mattie) was married to John D. McCULLAR, and their home was a two story white house at Creek on the Lovelady-Creek road. He died in 1926 and she in 1952, and they are both buried at the Creek Cemetery. Their children include Aaron T., Joel C., John, Della (Mrs. Aiken MORRIS), Houston, and Jim. They also reared a niece and nephew, Rosa and Richard McCULLAR.

Harley married Martha MORROW, and they lived in Pearson Chapel and Crockett. He died in 1962 and is buried at the Creek Cemetery. Their children include Lacy, Tom, Horace, Jewel (Mrs. Homer SANDERS), and Addie (Mrs. Oscar CORBETT). Another daughter, Florence, died when she was twelve years old.
