John Overton  Bartee, 1844 - 1905

Submitted by Linda Mearse

John Overton Bartee, son of Jesse and Melenah Bartee, was born in Edgefield District, South Carolina on March 26, 1844. Current information indicates that he was the 9th of 11 children (2 males and 9 females).

Shortly before 1860, the Jesse Bartee family left Edgefield District, South Carolina and came to Texas. They settled in Polk County about 13 1/2 miles southeast of the town of Livingston in a community known as Smithfield. This is in the area of the present day community of Ace.

The Civil War Years

1861 - 1865

The Bartee family had only a short time to establish themselves in their new home before the outbreak of the Civil War. Jesse Bartee’s sons and son-in-laws took up the “Southern cause” and joined the Confederate States Army.

As eighteen was the legal age for enlistment, John Overton enlisted four days after his eighteenth birthday on March 30, 1862 as a private in Co. E of the 20th Texas Infantry (Elmore’s Regiment).

The 20th Texas Infantry was originally scheduled for service in Virginia, but fortunately for John Overton and his many descendants, the regiment was rescheduled for the defense of the Texas Gulf Coast. The regiment participated in the Battle of Galveston, Texas on January 1, 1863 and in a following skirmish on January 3, 1863.

During his military service John Overton was assigned to the harbor patrol in Galveston, Texas (Sept. 1863) and detailed as a teamster for the Quartermaster Department (May 1864). In July of 1864 he was transferred to Co. G of the same regiment. The Company disbanded May of 1865 and John Overton returned home to fulfill a promise.

The Promise

According to family tradition, as all the young men of Smithfield were gathering to leave the comfort and safety of home for service in the Confederate States Army, the young women gave them something to carry with them. One of Thomas Murrah’s daughters, Elizabeth gave John Overton a single yellow rose. Upon receiving this rose, John Overton told Elizabeth that he planned on marrying her when he returned home.

On June 28, 1866, John Overton Bartee and Elizabeth Murrah did marry. They set up housekeeping near their families in Polk Co. and started their own family which would total 17 children. Twelve of these would reach adulthood and marry, and ten would have children of their own.

Sometime before 1880 John Overton and Elizabeth moved their family to Oakhurst in San Jacinto Co, Texas. The roots they put down here were deep as this was where they would spend the rest of their lives and many of their descendants still reside in this area.

While Elizabeth busied herself with the many chores, duties, and joys associated with raising a large family, John Overton and his sons worked in the fields raising food for the family and cotton to sell.

In addition to being a farmer, John Overton was also an ordained Baptist minister and he preached the gospel in the Livingston area and at Center Hill Baptist Church near Oakhurst.

His sons particularly enjoyed when he would be preaching in Livingston as this meant they would all get to leave work in the fields early on Friday. After cleaning up, John Overton would walk to Livingston. He probably walked only as far as the Trinity River and there took a ferry across or possibly a boat down river to Drew’s Landing. This would not only carry him to Menard Chapel Baptist Church, where it is believed he preached, but also back home where several of his sisters were still living. After preaching Saturday night and Sunday morning he would return home to Oakhurst.

John Overton Bartee died on February 24, 1905, aged 60 years and 11 months. The attending physician gave the cause of death as congestion. Many years later John Overton’s son, Willie, would suffer from the same symptoms that led to his father’s death. This time the symptoms would be recognized as appendicitis and surgery would lead to a full recovery. Although we will never know for certain, Willie was always convinced that appendicitis was the actual cause of John Overton’s death.

David Hopkins Bartee

Submitted by Russ Bartee

My ancestor, David Hopkins BARTEE, was born in South Carolina about 1816 (census records data). Nothing is known about his family: where the family originated, his siblings, or even where in South Carolina he lived. What little is known has been gathered from census records and county archives.

David Hopkins left South Carolina and met Lydia LUMMUS, whom he married in Sumter County, Alabama on 14 Sep 1840. Again, not much is known of this marriage, but David Hopkins married again just 5 years later: this time to Mary Ann CROW in Bibb County, Alabama by Jno. Dennis, M.G. A. son, James S., was born in Alabama about 1847. They moved shortly thereafter to Madisonville, Texas (in Madison County) where 10 additional children were born: Martha (abt 1849), Elzana J. (abt 1849), Thomas W. (abt 1853), Charles Crow (abt 1853), Fedelia (abt 1855), Willis (Feb 1855), Thomas (abt 1858), William (abt 1861), Ida (abt 1865) and John “Jack” (2 Aug 1866).

Little is known about David Hopkins’ doings while in Madison County, although a D.H. BARTEE is listed as serving with Company A, 21st Texas Cavalry (1st Texas Lancers) during the Civil War. If anyone has information either confirming or denying that this is the same David Hopkins, please contact me.

Both David Hopkins and Mary Ann disappear from Madison County records about this time. Where or when they died is unknown to this researcher.

Their children, however, leave a more tangible paper trail: James S. BARTEE married Josephine ________(?) -- who was also born in Alabama and later moved to Texas -- and had 3 children: James Elmo (30 Oct 1871; the author is the great-grandson of James Elmo), Franklin (abt 1877), and Clarence S. (Jan 1880). James S. is reputedly buried in an unmarked grave in Liberty Hill Cemetery, Williamson County, Texas, and Josephine died on 7 Mar 1884, and is buried in the Carolina Cemetery in Chilton, Texas. Her tombstone reads “Josephine wife of J.S. Bartee, 5 Oct. 1853 - 7 Mar. 1884”.

Willis BARTEE married Brazelle _________(?) and also had 3 children: Hattie (Nov 1883), Oma (Jan 1886) and Ebbie (sp?) (Dec 1887).

Charles Crow BARTEE had 3 confirmed marriages (Nancy AMOLA, Marinda E. STEPHENS, and Martha _________(?) and 1 unconfirmed marriage, producing a total of 7 children -- Sarah (abt 1856 by Nancy), Sallie A. (mother unknown. Sallie A. married J.W. RICHEY 26 Jul 1891 in Falls County, Texas), James Lee (23 Jul 1891), Mary (abt 1893), Bellah “Buck” (1 Nov 1895), Halley (sp?) (abt 1903), David W., and Gilson Arthur (all to Marinda). His marriage to Martha (listed in the 1910 Texas Census as being his 4th marriage and being married for 2 years) evidently produced no offspring.

There are many Texas branches -- most notably William BARTEE and his wife Eliza were granted land in Choctaw Bayou, Red River, Texas in November, 1836, “having served 3 months in the Army of Texas”. Anyone know about him?

The Jesse Bartee researchers shared census info on his descendants prior to the start-up of the newsletter. The following info was obtained after our last info exchange.

Since some of this may be too far down Jesse’s line to be of interest to everyone, in the interest of cutting expenses, copies of the census record were not included in your packet. The following info was extracted from the records and carefully checked for typographical errors. However, if this is of interest to you, you should get a copy of the original records.
