Email Virus Protection
New and Improved Anti-Virus Scanner
SMI is now scanning incoming and outgoing email for
viruses using Vircom ModusMail. The
anti-virus component of our mail server software is based on the Norman
Data Defense engine. Infected mail is cleaned on our server and a message is sent to the sender and
recipient warning them about the virus. The virus signatures are updated
daily but SMI cannot guarantee the solution will be 100% effective.
Customers should have virus protection installed on their own computers to
protect themselves against infection from email and other potential virus
sources.
Virus Removal
If you have received a message indicating you have a
virus, Symantec Corporation has posted a set of virus removal
tools for the most common viruses at www.symantec.com/avcenter/tools.list.html.
If you receive an email indicating your computer as the sender of a
message containing a virus, the message will contain a line similar to the
one below:
Scan report:
Virus 'W32/Sircam.A@mm'
in
ReferenceRequest[1].doc.lnk
In this case the reported virus is the Sircam worm.
Choose the Sircam_worm tool and follow the instructions. You may also use
an anti-virus package to remove most viruses.
Anti-Virus
Software
There are several choices for anti-virus software:
Symantec
McAfee
F-Secure
Remember, it is critical to keep the virus definitions
updated as new viruses or mutations of existing viruses are created
every day.
